About Joseph

Joseph Nolan is a Medical Herbalist with a COVID safe online practice, based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

When not herbalising, Joseph is a devoted dad and can be found at various play groups, parks, and children’s events around the city. His passions, shaped with the little one, include cooking, foraging, and books. Bookshops and food shops can be dangerous places to set him loose, but these two interests, reading and food, inform his professional life, and Joseph strives to give his patients both knowledge of their health and the means by which it can be fostered and maintained. As Hippocrates is believed to have said, some 2500 years ago, “let your medicine be your food and your food be your medicine.”

Training

Joseph’s herbal training was undertaken at the renowned Scottish School of Herbal Medicine in Glasgow, where he earned his BSc (Hons) degree in Herbal Medicine through the University of Wales in 2010.  Therapeutic massage and aromatherapy were part of his herbal training, and he has since enriched his knowledge with many courses including myofascial release, sports massage techniques, and manual lymphatic drainage. He has studied traditional Thai massage in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and learned Tok Sen under Ar-jarn Somphong Prapharat.  Joseph received his training in cupping from Shivago Thai School in Edinburgh, learning from such distinguished masters and teachers as Dr. Ilkay Chirali, Kru Chandor, and Kei Ngu.

Professional Activities

Joseph has done numerous workshops and talks for both professional groups and the general public on topics ranging from the herbal and nutritional treatment of hay fever to foraged medicines, to making traditional home remedies.  Herb walks are a particular favourite of his, as they are somewhat informal and offer a unique opportunity to share knowledge and experiences about plants growing nearby. More information on the type of workshops Joseph runs can be found on the Herbal Events page.

In his native New York City, Joseph has spoken as a guest lecturer on the herbal treatment of arthritis, pain, and depression, to specialising physicians in the Rehabilitation Department at Montefiore Medical Center, the teaching hospital of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

In Edinburgh, Scotland, Joseph has done events for the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists, North Lanarkshire Council, the Spire Murrayfield Hospital, and Queen Margaret University.  He was a volunteer consultant with Dr. Neil’s Garden, a project of the National Trust for Scotland, assisting during the creation of the physic garden.
